Kitchenesia.com – If by any chance, all of a sudden, out of the blue, you are craving for fermented food while you’re in Indonesia then you are in luck.

And if by fermented food you mean the ones made of cassava, well you’re in luck, too!

Here we have two of Indonesia’s famous fermented food: tape (pronounced 'tuh pay') and peuyeum.

If you happen to have a glance at the two and you cannot really tell the difference, you are among the confused lot.

Here in Indonesia, most people also can't tell and think that tape and peuyeum are the same.

Not to make anyone feel guilty, both are made from cassava, so well, it's kind of hard to tell.

In fact, there is actually a slight difference between the two.

Cassava tape is generally not durable because it is soft and runny.

Peuyeum - originates from West Java - is more durable because it is less runny.

And when it comes to taste and sweetness, tape is sweeter than peuyeum.

Another thing that differentiates the two is the basic ingredient, cassava.

The cassava commonly processed into tape is sweet cassava with the color white or yellowish.
